Residents of Palo Alto Commons have their paintings, quilts, photography and jewelry on display at the Palo Alto Art Center through Tuesday, Sept. 1.

A closing reception takes place Sunday, Aug. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Art Center, 1313 Newell Road. The event will include live music and refreshments, the Palo Alto Daily Post reported.

The exhibition spans media and decades of creative work. Dorothy Torgerson, 90, shows handmade quilts. Helen Shing contributes Chinese ink and watercolor pieces. Sharon Hamson's entries range across acrylics, watercolor and woodwork. Textile artists Henry and Millie Goltz display quilts together, while Ann Pearce exhibits photo print transfers on watercolor paper.

"It was so exciting to see my artwork displayed in such a beautiful gallery at the age of 90," Torgerson said. She called the exhibition an honor.

Other exhibiting residents include Elaine Goldberg (knitted shawl and handmade jewelry), Janis Marti (sketching and oil on canvas), Ray Jadwin (photography), Lorraine Wilner, Susan Tune, Thelma Ackley and Esther Baran (oil painting), Patricia Dentinger and Fran Adams (watercolor), and Marjorie Groshart (acrylics on canvas).

Palo Alto Commons, a senior living community founded in 1990, won a national award for resident empowerment from LifeLoop in January. The art exhibition grew from that same emphasis on keeping residents creatively active.

Li Li, executive director of Palo Alto Commons, said the show reflects that commitment.

"Seeing the pride and happiness on our residents' faces is the greatest measure of its success," Li said.

The RSVP deadline for the closing reception is Friday, Aug. 28. Contact Manalee Shukla, program director at Palo Alto Commons, at (650) 494-0760.
