Stanford men's basketball signed fifth-year forward Nick Townsend from Yale on Monday, Aug. 31, landing the 2026 Ivy League Player of the Year.
Townsend averaged 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game as a senior for the Bulldogs. He shot 51.1% from the floor and 46.3% from three-point range. At 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, the Chappaqua, New York, native gives head coach Kyle Smith a physical, versatile frontcourt piece.
Stanford's athletic department announced the signing with Smith praising Townsend's championship pedigree and late-cycle fit.
"With all of the changes in the landscape of college basketball, I did not necessarily want to add anyone this late in the recruiting cycle," Smith said. "However, Nick's attitude, leadership and accomplishments off the court are too impressive to ignore."
Townsend is the only returning player in the country who matched his averages in points, rebounds and assists, according to Stanford. He scored a career-high 32 points against Charleston on Nov. 23, 2025, and posted 14 career games of 20 or more points.
He helped Yale win three Ivy League regular-season championships and two conference tournament titles. He played in two NCAA Tournaments and two National Invitation Tournaments (NITs). In 2025-26, he served as team captain, earned his second consecutive first-team All-Ivy selection and was named a CSC Academic All-America second-team honoree and Lou Henson Award finalist.
Townsend also tested the professional waters, playing for the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2026 NBA Summer League before returning to college eligibility, Yahoo Sports reported. A recent rule change grants class-of-2022 players a fifth season.
Smith's roster already includes 7-foot center Austin Maurer, a transfer from Seattle, and 6-foot-10 forward Aidan Cammann. Transfer guard Christian Bliss, who averaged 17 points and six assists per game at Delaware, joins the backcourt.
The Cardinal posted back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2024-25 and 2025-26, sending Maxime Raynaud and Ebuka Okorie to the NBA. Still, Stanford has not reached the NCAA Tournament since the 2013-14 season, as Yahoo Sports noted. The expanded 76-team tournament field gives Smith's retooled frontcourt its first real test this fall.
