Palo Alto residents have until Friday, Sept. 4, to browse Stanford Libraries' annual showcase of newly acquired artist's books, photobooks and pop-up books at the Bowes Art & Architecture Library.
Summer Escape at Bowes, on view since June 22, fills the second floor of the McMurtry Building at 355 Roth Way with recent additions to the library's collection. The free exhibition is organized around themes of creative practice, sustainability and storytelling in the built and natural world.
Stanford Libraries describes the show as its yearly snapshot of what's new, arranged this year with a seaside motif. Items are grouped to suggest currents and horizons, with the layout inspired by the promotional image's soft bands of light and flowing lines. Among the acquisitions on display are artist's books, photobooks, pop-up books and what the event listing calls "railroad cars (?)" without further explanation.
The Bowes Library, overseen by head librarian Lindsay King, houses roughly 150,000 circulating volumes plus a Locked Stacks collection of rare artists' books, photobooks and twentieth-century ephemera. Locked Stacks items are available for in-house viewing but cannot be borrowed.
