Thieves smashed their way into CardVault by Tom Brady at Town & Country Village and stole about 60 trading cards worth more than $12,000, Palo Alto police said.

The burglary happened at about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the store at 855 El Camino Real, a week after the sports memorabilia chain held its grand opening. One or more unidentified suspects broke through the front window, then smashed several display cases inside, according to Palo Alto Online, which first reported the break-in, and ABC7 News.

No arrests have been made.

As of Thursday, Aug. 27, no suspects had been identified, police said.

The break-in came a week after a very different scene outside the store. On Aug. 15, fans lined up for hours outside the shop. Tom Brady appeared in person, greeting the crowd with fist bumps and high fives, signing hats and cards, and autographing the store's wall. Mayor Vicki Veenker and Police Chief James Reifschneider attended the opening.

CardVault, co-founded by Brady and Scott Heigelmann in 2020, sells trading cards, sealed boxes, and sports collectibles. The Palo Alto location is the chain's 17th store nationally and its second in the Bay Area, joining a San Francisco location near Oracle Park.

A central feature is the store's "signature vault," a museum-quality display of autographed helmets, jerseys, bats, and balls. The store describes its mission as being "part clubhouse, part gallery, part theater."

"We wanted something … a place where collectibles, culture and community could find each other," Heigelmann said ahead of the Aug. 15 opening.

No statement from CardVault or Brady about the burglary has been made public. The investigation remains open, and police have not released suspect descriptions.

The store, located next to chocolate shop SWISS55 at the corner of El Camino Real and Embarcadero Road, remains open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
