Palo Alto residents who drive US 101 north will hit intermittent lane and ramp closures on weeknights through the end of August as Caltrans crews repave, install guardrails, and perform electrical work along the Bayshore Freeway corridor.

The closures began Monday, Aug. 3, and run from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday nights until Aug. 31, according to Redwood City Pulse, citing Caltrans. The affected stretch spans from South San Francisco to East Palo Alto.

Not every lane or ramp will close every night. Caltrans described the disruptions as "intermittent," meaning drivers may find specific on- and off-ramps blocked on any given night.

What drivers should know

The 9 p.m. start time means late-evening travelers, ride-share drivers, and anyone on the corridor after dark could encounter single-lane bottlenecks or ramp detours. Caltrans advised motorists to allow extra travel time and use caution in the work zone.

For drivers looking to avoid the freeway entirely, El Camino Real (State Route 82) runs parallel to US 101 along the Peninsula and serves as the primary surface-street alternative.

Project details

Caltrans District 4, which maintains US 101 through San Mateo County and the Peninsula corridor, is overseeing three categories of work: paving, guardrail installation, and electrical upgrades. The agency has not released a project cost, contract details, or a nightly schedule showing which specific lanes or ramps will be affected on which nights.

The work is scheduled to wrap up after Aug. 31. No extension has been announced.
